3Rs Commendation for Draper Group

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Simon Draper and his group have been highly commended in the University's 3Rs report for "outstanding research conducted to the highest ethical standards". The University of Oxford places great importance on the proper care and review of experimentation involving animals, including replacing experiments involving animals with in vitro approaches.

The 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) were developed over 50 years ago to provide a framework for performing more humane animal research. Since then they have been embedded in national and international legislation and regulations on the use of animals in scientific procedures, as well as in the policies of organisations that fund or conduct animal research.

The University 3Rs report shows that significant progress was made by Simon’s group in all three areas they look at. The work done to replace animal use with in vitro approaches was commended as particularly impressive. They also noted that Simon and his group were role models for researchers working with regulators to improve the regulatory landscape and reduce animal use.
