The 32 European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) took place at the end of April 2022 in Lisbon. This was held as a hybrid event and was attended online by Angela and in person by Mimi, who was awarded a travel grant by ECCMID. Mimi presented the results from the P. vivax vaccine efficacy trials in the session ‘Novel observations in protective host responses to infection’.
The congress covered a huge range of topics on infectious diseases and microbiology and was a great opportunity for clinicians to catch up with the latest developments in clinical infectious diseases. Of relevance to the group’s work were a number of lectures on vaccines and malaria. Other particularly interesting talks included keynote lectures by Martin Blaser on ‘Pathogens and the microbiome: antibiotics at the crossroads’ and James Collins on ‘Harnessing deep learning and synthetic biology to fight pathogens’.
