In early September 2025 Simon participated in the AoPGBI (the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland) Webinar Series on Emerging Issues in Medicine.

The webinar, entitled “Malaria Vaccines in Africa – A New Chapter in the Fight Against Malaria”, engaged with key world leading experts in malaria vaccines. It was convened by Prof Sinéad Langan, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and speakers included Dr Mary Hamel, Senior Technical Officer and Team Lead for Malaria Vaccines, and Ms Eliane Pellaux-Furrer, Technical Officer Malaria Vaccines, both from the World Health Organisation (WHO), as well as Prof Simon Draper FMedSci from the University of Oxford.

The webinar focussed on how vaccines are transforming malaria prevention globally, and specifically, the development and implementation of malaria vaccines. It also reviewed obstacles to rolling out the vaccine programme globally and measures to address these challenges; and also discussed innovative opportunities around novel vaccine generation for malaria with implications for other vaccine preventable diseases.

The webinars learning goals were:

  • To develop an understanding of the burden of malaria globally;
  • To gain insights into recent developments in malaria vaccines;
  • To understand challenges and opportunities around malaria vaccine development and delivery.
